Finding different ways to play the same thing.
I wanted this piano student to work on coordination of hands in a simple exercise. Instead of playing it in the same place over and over, we gradually widened the gap, playing higher and lower on the piano. When we came to the extreme outer octaves, she felt she could reach better by kneeling in front of
the piano. (pictured below)
What to do when your student doesn't practice! For this piano student, we looked at a new piece in several different youtube renditions, which did lead us to some pretty hilarious critical analysis along the way. Here is an two piano, eight hand arrangement of Beethoven in which one side of the split screen shows a mirror image. Can you tell which one?
Other things I have done when students haven't practiced, forgot their music, or just for fun:
* sight reading
* duets with me
* playing by ear (that can give you a headache, if you're not careful)
Hey, whatever works!
Have a great weekend!
