December 1, at St. Luke's Lutheran church on the NE side of Grand Rapids saw an educational afternoon with a dozen students and their families. The program was designed around the "Elements of Music", with demonstrations and performances from the students, as I gave commentary to fit everything together. We learned about pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, articulation, and heard a variety of instruments and voice.
I was thinking along the lines of Exploring Music with Bill McLaughlin, heard on Blue Lake Public Radio here in the West Michigan area. (weekdays at noon and 7 pm, if you're interested) I highly recommend listening with your families whenever possible!
This recent recital was the culmination of our fall studies, and a great success! I believe my students enjoyed it as much as I did. I know the audience was appreciative, as many positive comments were made at our reception following.
Session Two will focus on how a performer presents themselves and their pieces. Audience communication through music and sensitivity to intention of composer are included. I look forward to continuing to develop musical understanding with my students.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Kwanzaa to all!
I'll see you all in January!
There are still a few openings for Session Two. Look under my tab "private lessons", above for details.
