Hello! I am a mom and grandma, who has spent most of my life raising and home schooling my children. In 2011, that all changed, when I continued my quest for my music degree which I began at Hope College back in 1980! At Hope, I studied clarinet with Michael Votta and piano with Joan Conway, and performing with Wind Ensemble, Band, Orchestra, and Chapel Choir. Over the years, I have provided lessons for a variety of instruments. Piano and clarinet are my strongest instruments, having studied both on the college level and played both professionally since 1970's.
While recently enrolled at Calvin University, I studied clarinet with John Varineau, and piano with Hysoek Kim. Active in ensembles, I performed under Dr. Engle, Mr. Varineau, and Dr. Nordling.
As a pianist, I provide background music for parties and open houses. I also have extensive accompaniment experience, including Greenville, Wyoming, VanGuard and Sparta districts. I have played weekly since early 2014 with the First Church of Christ, Scientist, providing service music and vocal accompaniments each Sunday and Wednesday. I also perform regularly with Grand- Rapids-based Sam's Swing Band on keyboard. My newest gig as mall pianist at Von Maur in Woodland Mall has been curtailed with COVID-19 restrictions.
As a clarinetist, I began professionally with a German Band in 1974. Through the years, I have also played for fun in various community bands in the area, including: Grand Rapids Symphonic Band, Rockford Community Band, Northview Community Band, Calder City Concert Band, and Sparta Community Orchestra. Fall 2019, I played alto saxophone at Rockford instead. I like to keep my skills fresh.
As a private teacher, I have provided piano lessons at Marshall Music in Grandville, and RIT music on Plainfield NE, Grand Rapids. I also offer lessons in my NE side home, including a variety of woodwind, brass, string instruments, and voice, with the clarinet and piano. As a Music Education Major, I have learned the basics of all instruments, and can start all students with a solid foundation. There are many musical concepts which are common to all instruments. I believe my focus on musicality and enjoyment of the art is appealing to anyone any age who wants to grow in their proficiency in learning an instrument! As of Spring 2020, I have had to continue learning new ways of teaching through social distancing and providing lessons on ZOOM.
In addition to the above, I provided guest teaching services in local school districts until the COVID-19 shutdown. Now substitute teaching positions are not called upon.. January-June 2017, I was able to serve as Middle School band director at Innocademy Charter Academy in Zeeland, MI. In March of 2019, I was thrilled to be an adjudicator for both Solo and Ensemble, and Choral groups with Lamont Christian School Fine Arts Festival. The last three months of 2019 school year, I enjoyed a long-term elementary music substitute position for Forest Hills District Orchard View Elementary.
I love to create music and help students meet their personal goals, whether it is for their own enjoyment, proficiency with their school ensembles, or sacred music. I am experienced with conventional music reading, chord/lead sheet, improvisation, and all genres from rock to classical from sacred to swing. I incorporate musical theory within my instruction as it pertains to the repertoire.
Spring 2020, I had a legal name change to Kreenah Dunsmore, returning to my maiden name. When not making music, I enjoy watching movies, coloring, doing jigsaw puzzles, reading books, teaching Hebrew, camping, and THIS
